What is
Novel?
A novel is a long prose narrative that
describes fictional characters and events in the From of a sequential story,
usually. If is a fictional piece of prose that is typically written in a
narrative style and presented as a found book. Novels tell stories which are
usually defined as a series of events described I a sequence.
It is a work of imagination. A novel is a
work of fiction that is, it is a story drawn out of the writer’s imagination.
It has people or characters that is people or individuals with their own
personalities. The plot of a novel is made up of events that are women together
in a deliberate pattern.
A novel anitates real life. The happenings in a novel mimics
real life. If presents real life having in it what we can believe are real
people even though some novels have fantasy characters or no real life happenings.
A novel may be fantasy but it has to be believable credible. In other tern, it
means new and must surprise the reader in some way. The ward “Novel” itself tales the reader that what is
told is ‘new’. Hence it must have the capacity to surprise the reader or must
contain something unusual that he has not heard of Clara Rew’s definition of
the novel is ,
“Picture of
real life and manners and of the time in which it is written”
R.I. Sternson says-
“The novel
is not a
transcript of life, to be judged by exactitude, but a simplification of
some side or point of life, to stand or fall by its significant simplicity.’’
From this
definitions, which touch different aspect of the novel, we can formulate
a working definition of the novel as “The interpretation of human life by means
of fictitious narrative in prose.’’
A GOOD NOVEL IS ALWAYS SYMBOLIC:-
There is always a meaning behind the
characters and Plato symbolization is important even In a novel like “Treasure
Island”, which is written with a purpose to appeal to lay’s imagination, so the
importance must be much greater in novels of high standard.
ASPECTS OF
THE NOVEL:-
A novel sometimes presents serious issues.
Although the theme of novels can be something quite trebling, it can also deal
with serious issues, such as the environment, corruption, politics, etc. The novel ‘catch us if you can’ deals with the
problems of the aged in society who are no longer able to tack care of
themselves. It also touches o problems of orphans or children who have no
parents or parents have gone missing.
THE NOVEL AS
A WORK OF ART:-
A lot of controversial dis passion is going on
regarding the question whether novel is a work of art or not some critics agree
that the novel is as much a piece of art, as a good poem or play. Some
refuse to accept that the novel is a work of art. The fact that the novel is a
work of art. The fact that the novel is the only literary medium through which
a writer discusses a great majority of problems. The novel serves as a social mediator, the vehicle of understanding, the instrument of self understanding
and criticism of laws and institutions.
The aim of the novel is to instruct. However,
a good novel can. Preach with pleasure. The novel is a means of relaxation and
it can do this as much as a poem or a play can.
Unlike poetry and drama, the novel has
multifarious forms and has no definite rules to observe. Definitions of the
novel are divergent, so it is difficult to have a clear picture of this from of
literature.
E. M.
Forster, in “Aspects of prose of the novel’’ defines
‘’AS A
FICTION IN PROSE OF CERTAIN EXTENT’’
He further remarks principles and systems may
suit other forms of art, but they cannot be applicable here… or if applied
their result must be subject to re-examination.
The novelists, from the earliest days of the
history of the novel, have asserted their right to do as they please, without
caring to rigid rules and regulations. Fielding, the father of the English
novel wrote in “Tom Jones”. As I am, in
reality, the founder of a new province of writing, so am I at liberty to make
what laws I please therein.
Literary critics are anxious to keep
the freedom of the novelist and the novel, not to be included in the domain of
art, they say that if the novel, its elasticity will be destroyed and a number
of writers, who are flourishing, will be deprived of their livelihood.
Sir Walter Raleigh also in his book “The
English Novel” speaks of “The Fine Art Of Fiction” and traces the gradual
emergence of its finely ordered structure.
The novel is no doubt, a form of art, on
account of especially two important reasons. In
the first place, in the novel, the author attempts to exhibit or
represent in the second place, he gives this external shape to his vision of life with the purpose
of giving pleasure to the readers. As a good novel possesses these two main
characteristics, there is no hesitation
in spite of the fact that there is more elasticity and freedom in this from
than in any other. A novel may be written for the sack of propaganda or
preaching some principles but at the same time; it is a portrayal of life and
gives us pleasure, it is definitely a piece of art.
